He was the son of Henry Kaylor and Elizabeth Herman and the grandson of early Lincoln County pioneer, George Kaylor. He was enlisted August 13, 1861, at Newton, North Carolina, by Captain Thomas L. Lowe and mustered into Company C, South Fork Farmers, 28th North Carolina Infantry, as 1st Corporal. He died of war related injuries on July 19, 1863, at Jordan's Springs, Virginia. His unit had been in action at Gettysburg and also in covering the crossing at Falling Waters. The loss of the 28th in these actions were 12 men killed and 92 wounded.
